Adam really likes the movie The Commitments. I don't blame him cos it's really good. In case you haven't seen it (and God forbid there is anyone that hasn't) the scenario is all about a young Irishman named Jimmy Rabbitte who decides to build a singing group, that he will be manager of. He runs auditions and gathers together a real bunch of misfits who gradually get into the hang of things and start churning out some good Soul sounds in the local pub scene; songs like "Mustang Sally" and "In the Midnight Hour" beautifully rendered by Andrew Strong in the role of fat, lazy layabout slob who sings like an Angel.



As well as bringing the lives of ordinary urban Irish to the fore, this odd little masterpiece also offered an opportunity for a whole new generation to hear and come to love the music of Wilson Pickett (known as the “Wicked Pickett”), the man who helped introduce the aggressive rhythmic style of soul music that came out of Alabama and Tennessee in the 60's.



“Atlantic’s answer to James Brown”, Wilson Pickett died yesterday in Virginia of a heart attack. He was 64.
