Retropolis

Remember playing Othello when you were a kid? What about those electronic Simon Says games? Noughts and Crosses?

You can play them all here. Go on, live a little.

I hired a DVD the other day, another of my favs. It's "Fried Green Tomatoes" and if you haven't seen it, it has all these cool old cars and locos in it. Not to mention the late, great Jessica Tandy. She was some actress. Don't panic, it still has all these features if you have seen it, too.

The kids were amazed at the black people being called "niggers" and being whipped and made to sit apart from the white people. "We hang niggers just as fast in Georgia as they do here in Alabama".

We talked about the Ku Klux Klan, how they originated and how insidiously socially deviant they were and still are.

We talked (briefly) about cannibalism and just who else might have eaten Big George's BBQ apart from the Georgia Laaaw Eeinfaawsment Officer. ("eewww Mum, they didn't really eat Frank, did they??"

We talked about the Great Depression and why people were homeless, starving and living in tent encampments.

All that intelligent conversation from just one $2 rental movie, and they still had to argue about who had the remote last...
