SUNDAY
You will be almost as glad as me that this is the last one of these. Remind me not to do the months of the year, will you?
Actually, it's been quite fun assembling such a collection of utterly useless (yet sometimes fascinating) myths into one small bunch of posts. It's no wonder we're all so fucked up when every day we live under the umbrella of such a bunch of immature and incestuous rich-kids with nasty tempers and flash jewellery.
And Sunday had the flashest jewellery of all.
Sunday celebrates the sun god Ra/Helios/Apollo/Ogmios/Mithrias and the sun goddess, Phoebe (twin sister of Apollo/Phoebus, and the Moon goddess Artemis). It's the official first day of the week and dedicated to the worship of the Sun and so what better metal is there to dedicate in return than gold?
Helios (the Greek god version) rose each morning at dawn from the ocean in the east and rode in his chariot, pulled by four horses ( Aethon, Pyrois, Eos and Phlegon) through the sky, to disappear at night in the west. He was the witness of all things. The 100 foot tall Colossus of Rhodes, the sixth of the seven great wonders of the ancient world, was built in his honour by Charès of Lindos in 280 BCE.
Buzzing around in his golden chariot, wearing his halo, he was the rich kid with the flash wheels; his attributes the whip and the globe and his sacred animals the eagle and the cock. (Why doesn't that surprise me?)
Constantine the Great, in 321 CE decreed that this day of sun worship be a day of rest. And so it is today.
Your song for Sunday:
Sunday, Bloody Sunday - U2
What else, hmmm?
May the sun shine up your back passage this venerable day of the Sun.
:-)
